Passive Safety

Mitsubishi Fuso spent a lot of time designing safety into the Canter. In fact they started a brand new crash research programme to try and redesign the cab over engine concept in such a way that it would be much safer than anything that had gone before. The crash data was then combined with extensive computer simulation and further practical trials with the results changing the design of today's Canter. These design changes have culminated in RISE: Mitsubishi Fuso's Realised Impact Safety Evolution:

A reinforced chassis frame and closed cross-sections in the frame carrier are combined with parallel crossed door frame structures and an energy-absorbing instrument carrier.

The advantage of this design is that the driver and passengers have significantly more room in the event ov a collision. Optional driver and passenger airbags and seat belt pre-tensioners on the three point belts provide even greater protection.

Active Safety

ABS and Braking Systems

Of course you don't want the collision to happen in the first place and thats why every Canter over three and a half tonnes comes with ABS as standard. Users of 3.5t Canters can have the system fitted as a factory option. In addtion to ABS, all Canters have high performance disc brakes on all four wheels - outperforming drum brakes considerably and providing much improved stoppind distances even with a heavy load. Canters Hydraulic brakes have a shorter pedal travel in order to achieve maximum braking, with stopping also assisted by the standard exhaust brake.

Other Safety Improvements

As part of the Canter improvements, the suspension system was redesigned with new leaf springs. In addition the wheel location was adjusted and this with the vehicles twin tyres not only add to its safer handling, but also gives a much more stable feeling on the road. Visibility has been given consideration to aswell, with a large windscreen and side windows that extend deeper to improve all round vision. These are kept clear with the Canters powerful ventilation system and heated wing mirrors*. The halogen headlamps can also be fitted ith an optional cleaning system.
